Education & Training at Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute

At the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute (SORI), education is at the core of our mission to advance orthopaedic care. Through training, research collaboration, and knowledge-sharing, we support the development of future surgeons, researchers, and healthcare professionals. Our education initiatives span from registrar training and university partnerships to scientific symposiums and GP education programs.

Training the Next Generation of Orthopaedic Surgeons

SORI is committed to advancing orthopaedic care by supporting the education and development of future surgeons. Our team is actively involved in the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) registrar training program, providing supervision, surgical exposure, and mentorship across a wide range of knee conditions and procedures.

We also host clinical and research fellowship programs, offering local and international surgeons the opportunity to gain experience in high-volume surgical practice, contribute to ongoing research, and deepen their understanding of evidence-based approaches to knee surgery.

Fellows are integrated into our clinical and research environment, participating in case discussions, data analysis, and study design alongside experienced orthopaedic specialists.

With over 50 fellows trained to date, SORI continues to play a leading role in shaping the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through a combination of hands-on learning and academic development.

GP Education & Professional Development

General Practitioners (GPs) are central to the early identification and management of musculoskeletal conditions. At SORI, we support GPs through focused education evenings that translate orthopaedic research and clinical experience into practical knowledge for primary care.

We regularly host CPD-accredited events in collaboration with partners such as St Vincent’s Health Australia, Mater Hospital, and North Shore Private Hospital, covering topics including ACL injuries, osteotomy, arthritis management, imaging, and rehabilitation.

These sessions often feature case-based discussions, expert presentations, and hands-on demonstrations.

Our goal is to strengthen communication between GPs and orthopaedic teams, supporting better outcomes for patients.

Scientific Symposiums & Conferences

SORI is committed to fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration through regular involvement in scientific symposiums and professional meetings.

We host local educational events, visiting fellow presentations, and collaborative evenings that bring together orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, and allied health professionals to share the latest insights and innovations in knee surgery and musculoskeletal care.

Our team also contributes to national and international conferences, presenting original research and participating in discussions that help shape the future of orthopaedic practice.
